Molly Ivins, 1944-2007

Progressive political columnist Molly Ivins died of breast cancer last night. This is so incredibly sad. The Texas Observer has an obituary and tribute page.

I saw her speak at an ACLU event in Louisville, and she was just as witty, earthy and delightful in person as in her writing.

No one succeeded more brilliantly in standing up for People against Power, right on Power's home turf, without ever being pushed to the margins by the Corporate Consensus and its media. We've lost a national treasure at far too young an age.

When a fighter of the good fight leaves the fray, others stand up to take her place. Molly, I promise -- I'll be of 'em!

She helped me to laugh at bad news. I loved all the letters to the editors at the Chicago Tribune that demanded that she be dropped. I will miss her.
