The South Dakota Abortion Ban=Really Bad News
Goodbye, Roe. As if a federal late-term abortion ban with no exception for a woman's health wasn't enough, now South Dakota anti-choicers are pushing through a near-total abortion ban with no exception for a woman's health, or in cases of rape or incest. A ban they're hoping will be challenged in court all the way up to the Supreme Court. From the Boston Globe:
PIERRE, S.D. -- South Dakota lawmakers approved a ban on nearly all abortions yesterday, setting up a frontal assault on Roe v. Wade at a time when some activists see the US Supreme Court as more willing than ever to overturn the 33-year-old decision.Apparently the bill includes a five-year jail term for doctors. I don't have much blogging time this morning, but for some more thoughts, see Pandagon, FireDogLake, Shakespeare's Sister, and Shakespeare's Sister again. Also, Ann Telnaes has a cartoon on the subject.Governor Mike Rounds, a Republican, said he was inclined to sign the bill, which would make it a crime for doctors to perform an abortion unless it was necessary to save the woman's life. The measure would make no exception in cases of rape or incest.

Update: Feministing has a lot more analysis on what the South Dakota ban could mean.
