New Cartoon on Federal Abortion Ban: "Dr. Alito's Second Opinion"
Plus, Larry Summers resigns
I was feeling really sick yesterday but managed last night to put something together because I was so scared about the new Alito/Roberts/Scalia/Thomas Supreme Court taking on the so-called "partial-birth abortion" federal ban--a ban that makes no exception for the health of the mother and is so vaguely worded it might be interpreted to apply to abortions after as little as 12 weeks.
I hope the cartoon is not too obscure. My point is just that the ban makes a false claim that there is a medical consensus that these procedures are never medically necessary for a woman's health, which is total crap--tests often don't detect severe fatal fetal anomalies until long past 12 weeks. It's not a ban on a specific procedure, it's a large-scale attack on reproductive rights and Roe as a whole. Doctors have testified that they must have discretion to perform late-term abortions for health reasons--but I suspect Alito and his buddies don't care enough about women's lives to listen.
In unrelated news, Harvard President and sexist extraordinaire Larry Summers resigned yesterday. About damn time. Back when I was a student at Harvard, I did a cartoon about Larry Summers famous scolding of famed Afro-American studies professor Cornel West ("Leadership Lessons with Larry"). I never got around to doing a cartoon about his sexist assertion that women were inherently inferior in math and science, but Jen Sorensen did a great one.
And even more unrelated, Ben over at Fighting Words has a Mardi Gras cartoon.
