Random Mikhaela-Toon sighting

So I was working on a followup to my cartoon about the deportation of Cambodian refugees and I was excited to come across this image of some protest signs using parts of my cartoon. I am a big believer in donating cartoons to good causes, and this is a REALLY important and urgent cause. The Campaign Against Southeast Asian Deportation and Asians and Pacific Islanders for Community Empowerment had kindly sent me some of the buttons and posters they had made with the images but those look like handmade signs, which is even cooler.

But as nice as it is to know the cartoon is out there, unfortunately the deportation and breaking up of families is still going on. API Force's web site seems to be down, but you can find out more from CAAAV's Southeast Asian Freedom Network. CAAAV does a lot of vital work and they also take donations, hint hint hint.

P.S. I was extremely embarassed to discover recently that my original "Give Me Your Tired, Your Poor (Sort of)" cartoon contained an egregious spelling mistake--I had typed "Khmer Rogue" instead of "Khmer Rouge." I took French, and I know the word for red is spelled "rouge", but somehow I must have kept switching the letters in my head. This cartoon has been widely reprinted in several books and on posters and such, so I'm going to crawl away and die of shame now.

The Center for New Words is holding a fabulous online celebrity auction closing Dec. 8. Win all sorts of cool items including original cartoon artwork by Alison Bechdel or me , an answering machine message from Dorothy Allison, a tarot card reading from Michelle Tea, a manuscript editing by Katha Pollitt, a poster signed by Margaret Atwood, and so on. All proceeds benefit the Center for New Words.

I don't have any new Phoenix or Bay Windows toons for you (I'll have one of each next week), but I do have a Women's eNews toon I did for World AIDS day, "Badly Needed Medicine".

A few good cartoons I saw today: Ruben Bolling chronicles the adventures of the Fabulouses, Scott Bateman is excited about Bush's health care plan, and Ted Rall lauds the racial sensitivity of the Bush Administration.

Also, from the "no, he couldn't really be saying that, could he?" department, conservative cartoonist Chuck Asay has a pro-racial-profiling cartoon called "How the New Homeland Security Chief Could Really Improve Airline Safety". His argument: little old white Christian ladies shouldn't be searched because they don't look like Islamic terrorists. Perhaps this will inspire the terrorists to recruit a group of little old ladies.
